Police responding to the call of a shooting on the 3900 block of Lowell Boulevard this afternoon found an elderly woman who was shot to death and took a man into custody, said Det. John White, a Denver police spokesman.
The relationship between the suspect and victim was unclear and neither have been identified by police. The man was arrested at the scene without incident, White said.
Neighbors were surprised to hear that an elderly woman had been shot, because they said they believed the woman who owned the home no longer lived there.
“If that’s her, it’s a surprise to me,” said next-door neighbor Sam Ortiz. “All I knew was that they had taken her to a (nursing) home.”
Ortiz said a nephew of the owner cared for the house, but he did not think anyone was living there full-time.
Just before police arrived, neighbor Christopher Stock said he heard shouting outside the house.
“It was really frantic yelling,” he said.
He did not hear any gunshots.
Police blocked off most of the surrounding block and there were about 10 squad cars going back and forth throughout the afternoon. Some neighbors sat outside watching the scene.
Stock and other neighbors said they were surprised by the murder.
“This is a pretty safe area for the most part,” he said.
