Rescuers have recovered the body of a man who apparently drowned Tuesday afternoon in a gravel pit in the Chatfield Reservoir area.

Littleton firefighters received a 911 call about 3:49 p.m. Tuesday about a missing person thought to be in the fishing hole just south of the main reservoir, said Doug Ireland, division fire chief.

The identity of the victim has not been released, and Jefferson Countysheriff’s investigators were at the scene interviewing witnesses late Tuesday, Ireland said.

Four men were fishing the pit when one of them waded out into the water about 12 feet from shore, Ireland said. When his friends turned and looked away, he disappeared into the water.

A rescue diver searched the pit and found the man in about 18 feet of water, about 46 feet from shore, Ireland said.

The man had no pulse, but he was transported to Littleton Adventist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.
