The Little Sun Drum and Dance Group put smiles on the faces of patients and staff at The Children’s Hospital this morning.
The group of eight dancers and two drummers came to the hospital from the Wyoming Wind River Reservation as a part of their tour to promote Cheyenne Frontier Days. The Wyoming rodeo and Western-themed events start Friday and run through July 29.
Earl Atwood, the lead assistant of the CFD Indian Committee, said dancers have been coming to the hospital for almost 40 years. Many of the volunteers said the hospital is their favorite stop on the Front Range.
“The little kids are so cute, and they love having us here, and we love being here, so it’s a great combination,” said Miss Frontier Katie Landers.
The group also visited the plaza at Bank of the West, 621 17th St., early this afternoon before returning to Cheyenne.
The hospital visit is especially important because many of the Native American dances are for healing or prayer, said Little Sun leader Sandra Iron Cloud.
Before she invited patients to dance with the group she said: “Our songs are to share and also to send blessings.”
