DU’s Kempter advances at North & South
University of Denver golfer Katie Kempter defeated Marisa Milligan of Normal, Ill., 1-up Wednesday in the first round of the 105th Women’s North & South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina.
Kempter, of Albuquerque, will face Courtney Gunter of Matthews, N.C., in today’s second round.
Littleton’s Ashley Tait was eliminated by Emma Bennett of Moama, Australia, 2 and 1.
Hubbard looking for another CGA title
Mark Hubbard, of Pinehurst Country Club in Denver, was one of eight golfers who qualified for the quarterfinal round of the Colorado Golf Association Junior Match Play Championship at Wellshire Golf Course.
Hubbard, the defending CGA Junior Stroke Play champ, topped Derek Francois of Collindale 2 and 1 in the round of 32. He then eliminated Brenden Beeg of Fox Hollow in the round of 16. Hubbard will face Steven Moore of Cherry Hills, in the quarterfinals.
Eaton and Pallatino cruise to Brassie title
The team of Kim Eaton and Cindy Pallatino never trailed after opening a first-round lead and cruised to win the Colorado Women’s Golf Association Brassie Championship at Grandote Peaks Golf Club in La Veta. Eaton, of Englewood Golf Club, and Pallatino, Mira Vista, combined for a two-round total 140 with consecutive 70s. Lynne Batchelder and Nancy Ziereis, of Valley Country Club, finished second at 155.
Rodriguez wins second gold at Pan Am Games
The United States women’s 800-meter freestyle relay team, led by Cherry Creek High School standout Jessica Rodriguez of Aurora, won a gold medal at the Pan American Games in Sao Paulo, Brazil. She combined with Emily Kukors, Auburn, Wash.; Ava Ohlgren, Northville, Mich.; and Katie Carroll, Toledo, Ohio. Rodriguez won swimming gold in the 400 freestyle Tuesday.
Outlaws hosting clinic
Players and coaches with Major League Lacrosse’s Denver Outlaws will host a children’s clinic Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon at Invesco Field. The event includes a skills showcase, obstacle course and autograph session. Register Sunday, 9:30 a.m., at the stadium’s north tunnel or prior to the event at.
