The flashing blue and red lights on top of roadside trailers in Boulder may give residents the same anxiety as if a police squad car was racing up to them from behind.
The new speed trailers warn drivers to slow down when they go above the speed limit. Exceptionally speedy drivers will trigger the flashing lights, said Bill Cowern, a city transportation operations engineer.
The speed trailers have previously only displayed flashing numbers when a vehicle is speeding.
“We would like to discourage people from speeding before they receive a handful of tickets,” Cowern said.
The trailers will be set up beside residential streets where speeding is a problem, he said.
