Mark Hubbard of Pinehurst Country Club and Will Logsdon of Hiwan Golf Club will meet in the final of the 57th Colorado Golf Association Junior Match Play Championship after they advanced past the semifinal round Thursday at Wellshire Golf Course.

Hubbard, a recent graduate of Colorado Academy who will attend San Jose State, defeated Steven Moore of Cherry Hills 4 and 3 in the quarterfinals and Jack Farrow of Meridian 5 and 4 in the semifinals. Hubbard could become the fourth player to win the CGA Junior Stroke Play title and the Junior Match Play crown in the same year.

Logsdon, an Evergreen High School grad who will attend Hastings (Neb.) College, eliminated Parker Edens of Greeley Country Club on the 19th hole in the quarterfinals and topped Oliver Grabb of Boulder Country Club 2-up in the semifinals.

  • University of Denver golfer Katie Kempter of Albuquerque was eliminated in the second round of the 105th Women’s North and South Amateur Championship at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina. She fell to Courtney Gunter of Matthews, N.C., 2-up.

    Rage re-signs key defenseman

    The Rocky Mountain Rage of the Central Hockey League re-signed defenseman Clay Plume for a second season with the team. Plume, the team’s defenseman of the year last season, set career highs for goals (eight), assists (18), points (26) and penalty minutes (75). He was one of two Rage players, with Craig Olynick, to play in each of the team’s 64 games last season.

    Mines fills three coaching vacancies

    Colorado School of Mines hired three coaches, including the school’s first head softball coach, and an athletic trainer. Anna Van Wetzinga, who spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Indiana State University, will coach softball for the Orediggers; Josh Hutchens was tabbed assistant wrestling coach; Brad Schick becomes assistant men’s basketball coach; and Stephanie Begley was hired as an assistant trainer.

    Colorado sophomore basketball player Aija Putnina, playing for Latvia, scored 19 points in a 65-58 loss to Bulgaria in the qualifying round of the 2007 European Championship for Women in Sofia, Bulgaria.
