EAGLE, Colo.—Heavy rains on the Western Slope sent mud and other debris onto Interstate 70 and U.S. 6 Thursday, hitting at least one car with 1 1/2 feet of mud and prompting transporation officials to close some lanes.
No injuries were immediately reported.
Debris forced the closure of I-70 between mile marker 151 to 152, and U.S. 6 at mile marker 154 between Eagle and Wolcott, Colorado Department of Transportation officials said. Interstate 70 was also closed between milepost 140 to 141.
“I was driving, taking my time because of the rain and all of a sudden the mountain started coming down on me,” Bill Steavens, who was heading home to Grand Junction after work, told the Vail Daily. “Luckily somebody was looking after me today.”
Steavens’ Chrysler Sebring was pulled out.
Eagle County Sheriff’s Deputy Justin Clark said the slide that hit Steavens was about 75 feet long.
