Aspen – What sounded like someone calling for help after a rock slide may have been the bleating of mountain goats, rescuers said.
A hiker reported hearing distressed human cries after the slide above Grizzly Lake near Independence Pass on Tuesday.
Rescuers searched the area, accounted for all the people staying at a nearby campground and found no unclaimed cars at access points to Grizzly Peak.
“I can’t say we’re 100 percent certain, but we can say with a high degree of certainty that there’s nobody up there,” Pitkin County sheriff’s patrol director Ann Stephenson said.
Nineteen members of Mountain Rescue Aspen and a search airplane responded to the call.
