A 40-year-old Denver man who failed to return from a hike up Grays Peak, a popular 14,000-foot mountain in Summit County, was found late Saturday night.

Joe Ben Slivka, the group leader for the Summit County Rescue Group, said the man “is alive and well.

“He took an alternate route out because of the weather and got himself turned around,” Slivka said today.

More than 25 members of the rescue group searched for the man, along with a helicopter.

The rescue group was alerted and began the search after the hiker failed to return home and his car was located.

Slivka said the man, who was hiking alone, won’t have to pay for the search.

“We never charge for a search and rescue,” Slivka said.
