Left Hand Brewing Co. Rye Bock Lager, $11.99 for a 750ml bottle
If you like your brews big, sweet and spicy, you’re going to swoon over Left Hand Brewing Co.’s Rye Bock Lager.
It’s definitely a mouthful. Each swig involves cherry, black pepper and toasted caramel. There’s a tang to the beer, almost a fizz, and the Left Hand folks say it’s got something to do with the rye, a difficult grain for brewing.
Bock beer, always a lager, is a German creation renowned for its strong malt profile. The malt is no shrinking violet in Left Hand’s interpretation of bock.
It’s not the sort of beer you’ll want to sip with corn on the cob and salad, a bowl of gazpacho or a fresh spring roll.
But shepherd’s pie? Fish and chips? Beef stew or a burger mounded with blue cheese and bacon, or even a plate of raw oysters? It’s the ticket. Just in time for fall. | Left Hand Brewing Co., 1265 Boston Ave., Longmont, 303-772-0258; | Douglas Brown
