University of Denver defenseman Keith Seabrook, who tallied 13 points in 37 games as a freshman last season, has left the hockey team to seek a professional career, coach George Gwozdecky said.

Seabrook signed with the major junior Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League. With the signing, he forfeited his remaining three years of college eligibility.

“Keith and his family felt the U.S. college hockey development model of practice and games combined with rigorous academics would not benefit his hockey career,” Gwozdecky said.

Seabrook scored two goals and added 11 assists last season with a minus-3 plus-minus rating. He was a 2006 NHL draft pick of the Washington Capitals in the second round.

UNC hires Johnson as assistant coach

The University of Northern Colorado women’s basketball program has hired Ryan Johnson as an assistant coach. Johnson was the Bears’ director of basketball operations last season.

Before joining UNC, he spent one year as an assistant coach at Utah State, and was the director of operations at Colorado State. He also spent six years coaching at Arvada West High School and Wheat Ridge High School, where he helped both teams to Sweet 16 appearances and the Farmers to an Elite 8 showing.
