A Glenwood Springs police officer was shot in the chest late Sunday while trying to question two men who were spotted walking around storage units at the airport.
The officer, whose identity was not released, was wearing a bulletproof vest and does not have a life-threatening wound.
Police said the officer attempted to stop the two men around 11 p.m. Sunday. The two men kept walking, despite repeated commands to stop.
One of the men then turned and fired a number of shots at the officer, hitting him once in the chest, police said. The officer returned fire as the men fled.
A number of police departments have joined in the search for the two men, but they have not been found.
Police described the suspects as Latino males, about 18 to 20 years old. Both men had very short hair.
One was wearing a red hooded sweat shirt, lace-up boots and either jeans or dark pants. The other was wearing a dark blue or black-hooded sweat shirt, dark pants or jeans and white tennis shoes.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Glenwood Springs Police Department at 970-384-6500.
Police Chief Terry Wilson told the Glenwood Springs Post-Independent that the incident occurred near a police impound lot, where there has been a long history of break-ins.
The investigation will be run by the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office because Glenwood police would rather have an outside agency lead the investigation in a shooting involving one of its officers.
