Marcia Wieder, author of “Making Your Dreams Come True” and host of the PBS-TV special of the same name, wants to help you achieve your wildest dreams. Whether it’s more quality time with your family or moving to Fiji, she’s got a plan. We caught up with this motivational speaker at Jones International University in Centennial and asked how to turn dreams into reality.
1. Find your purpose. Get in touch with what matters to you. It can be a mission or calling, or something that makes you happy. You can go on a passion quest to discover what matters – a weekend, a week or a month. You don’t have to put the rest of your life on hold. Follow what has heart and meaning to you.
2. Know your dream. A dream is simply something you want. Not all dreams have to be Mother Teresa or save-the-world dreams. It could be spending quality time with family and friends, or being paid well for doing what you enjoy. This can be just as important as writing the great American novel. Be clear about what you want by writing it down and getting it out of your head.
3. Deal with doubt. The biggest obstacles are not a lack of time and money, but the presence of doubt and fear. We all have conversations in our head. You’re too old, too young or you don’t know how to do it. Turn the voice of the doubter down so that it becomes the realist who simply wants to know what the plan is. Big dreams die because our doubts, and fears immobilize us.
4. Check your beliefs. Our attitudes and beliefs are never neutral; they either move us forward or hold us back. We forget that we choose what we believe. Can you believe in something simply because it matters to you?
5. Take a serious step forward. Prove that you believe in your dreams by taking action. Dreams without action are fantasies or just nice ideas. Prove, with action, that you’re more committed to your dreams than your doubts.
