Aurora — A man was killed in a three-vehicle crash Tuesday night when a suspect fleeing from police allegedly ran a red light and smashed into the side of a minivan.
Police have arrested a 27-year-old man, who is believed to have caused the crash. The suspect, whose identity was not immediately released, could face a charge of vehicular homicide, Aurora police Detective Bob Friel said.
The crash came after a domestic violence report involving the suspect, police said.
Around 8:30 p.m., a woman called police reporting that her boyfriend was armed with a gun and was sitting in his car in front of her apartment in the 15500 block of East 12th Avenue.
Officers responded and identified the man as having a previous warrant for his arrest for domestic violence, Friel said.
“We told the female to stay inside, to stay away from him until the officers could get there because we were worried for her safety,” Friel said.
As officers arrived, they spotted the suspect’s gray Dodge sedan leaving the area and pulled him over.
During the traffic stop, the suspect fled in the car and officers gave chase with lights and sirens on Chambers Road.
The suspect was fleeing at a high speed and weaving through traffic when police determined that the chase was endangering other motorists and slowed their pursuit, Friel said.
“We made the decision not to pursue him and officers shut off their emergency equipment,” Friel said. The fleeing suspect apparently slammed into a westbound minivan at Smith Road and Chambers, sending the van into a gully near the intersection. The driver of minivan was rushed to a nearby hospital but soon after died from his injuries, Friel said.
Another vehicle was damaged in the collision, but the driver of that car was not hurt.
The suspect suffered serious injuries and also was transported to a nearby hospital, where he will be released into police custody once doctors clear him, Friel said.
Officers did find a gun inside the suspect’s vehicle, Friel said.
