Mammoth’s Catton given franchise player tag

The Colorado Mammoth of the National Lacrosse League designated defenseman Rich Catton a franchise player, keeping him from becoming an unrestricted free agent, the team said.

NLL teams can peg two franchise players in order to keep the rights to veterans age 32 and older with at least six seasons of experience.

The Mammoth signed Catton, 35, as a free agent before the 2006 season. The 6-foot-1, 210-pound defender collected 131 loose balls in 32 games for the Mammoth the past two seasons.

Senior point guard Steve Wetrich left the University of Denver men’s basketball team because of several concussions suffered in his playing career, coach Joe Scott said.

“I had a great time in my three years with the basketball team,” Wetrich said. “I wish the team the best of luck, and I’ll be there cheering them on every chance I get.”

Wetrich averaged 5.1 points and 2.4 assists in 74 games for the Pioneers. As a junior last season, he averaged 7.4 points and 3.4 assists in 14 games.
