Aurora — Police believe speed might have been a factor in a two-vehicle crash that killed a motorcyclist this afternoon at the intersection of East Mississippi Avenue and South Blackhawk Street.
Officers responded about 3:45 p.m., and found the unidentified rider, described as an adult male, lying in the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Witnesses told investigators man was riding his blue 1999 Yamaha alongside two other motorcyclists, speeding and popping “wheelies” for about a mile and a half before he collided with the passenger side of a Oldsmobile sedan, Aurora police Sgt. William Revelle said.
There were conflicting reports as to whether the man was riding on the rear wheel of the bike at the time he collided with the car, Revelle said.
The driver of the Oldsmobile was injured and was transported to an area hospital. The identity of the driver was not available.
Revelle said the two motorcyclists riding alongside the man stopped briefly when they saw the accident but left before police arrived.
