San Francisco – Randy Winn hit a bases-loaded single with one out in the 11th inning Monday to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 3-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on a night Barry Bonds failed to hit his record 756th home run.
Nationals rookie John Lannan held Bonds hitless, leaving him tied with Hank Aaron with 755 homers. Bonds fouled out in the first inning, walked in the third, grounded into a double play in the fifth and struck out in the seventh before leaving.
The teams traded runs in the 10th before Ryan Klesko started the winning rally in the 11th with a double off Ray King (1-1). Dave Roberts was intentionally walked, and Rajai Davis was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Luis Ayala came on and got Omar Vizquel to hit into a fielder’s choice groundout before Winn won it with a line drive to right field, his fourth hit of the game.
Brad Hennessey (2-3) pitched a scoreless 11th for the win.
CARDINALS 10, PADRES 5 (10) at St. Louis: St. Louis tied a major- league record with 10 consecutive hits in a 10-run fifth inning, with pitcher Braden Looper and Aaron Miles getting two hits apiece.
“That’s momentum like I’ve never seen before,” said Ryan Ludwick, who homered in the big fifth. “It’s just an incredible inning.”
Looper opened the inning with a single to center, and then with the Cardinals up 8-3 bunted for another hit. Miles followed Looper (9-9) twice with singles, the latter driving in a run. The streak was broken when David Eckstein hit a sacrifice fly and So Taguchi ended the inning by grounding into a double play.
Scott Rolen’s three-run homer was the biggest hit, putting St. Louis ahead 7-3.
ASTROS 2, CUBS 1 (10) at Houston: After Chicago stranded the potential winning run at third base in the top of the 10th, Eric Munson hit an RBI single in the bottom half that gave Houston the victory.
Chicago, which remained one game behind the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers, threatened in the 10th against Brad Lidge (3-1) when Jason Kendall singled leading off, took second on a sacrifice and advanced on a flyout. Lidge then struck out Cliff Floyd.
