All starry-eyed

When you break the most hallowed record in the sport you have chosen to spend your life playing and then, in the postgame news conference about it, you feel the need to say, firmly and with conviction, “This record is not tainted. At all. Period,” it is clear the record is tainted.

But because I’m a glass-full kind of guy, I would like to point out the good that has come from Barry Bonds’ quest.

Before this season, the majority of the population didn’t know how to pronounce or spell “asterisk.” Most thought it was “astrick.”

Anything that increases the general knowledge of punctuation is good.

Handful of memories

We all remember things from childhood, and one of mine was meeting Jack Dempsey. There were two restaurants on 17th Street in downtown Denver, run by two brothers who had been boxers. One was Lou Coffee and the other was Joe “Awful” Coffee. My uncle introduced me to the champ, and I remember shaking Dempsey’s hand. My hand was engulfed and disappeared.

I had shaken the hands of adults before, but nothing like this. I shall never forget the experience and the class of this man with a little boy.
