DENVER—Colorado won’t get $235 million in federal highway money to add a combination HOV-toll lane on U.S. 36 between Denver and Boulder.

The project had been a finalist for a Department of Transportation program aimed at reducing traffic jams in congested cities.

Colorado Department of Transportation spokeswoman Stacey Stegman said Tuesday the U.S. 36 project didn’t make the cut.

Colorado wants to add an 18-mile-long express lane that would be free for high-occupancy vehicles, buses and motorcycles. Lone drivers would pay a toll based on the amount of traffic on the road.

CDOT Director Russ George said state and local governments will keeping working to find funding for U.S. 36.
