CHICAGO—The Chicago Tribune’s community journalism Web site delivered its first print edition Thursday to readers in nine Chicago suburbs.

The newspaper launched in April to let readers publish stories, photos and blogs about their communities.

The print edition, with a distribution of more than 23,000 copies, contains reader content from the Web site and stories produced by Triblocal staff, according to a statement posted Thursday on the Chicago Tribune’s Web site.

Triblocal covers the western suburbs of Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles, Elburn and Maple Park and the southern suburbs of Tinley Park, Orland Park, Orland Hills and Homer Glen.

The print edition, published by Chicago Tribune Company subsidiary Chicagoland Publishing Co., will be included in Thursday editions of the Tribune. One version will go to western suburbs and another will go to southern suburbs.

“Triblocal serves community members who want to know about news and events that are really close to home and advertisers who want to reach this burgeoning audience in the outer suburbs,” Ted Biedron, president and general manager of Chicagoland Publishing, said in the statement. “Early response from both has been very positive.”

Readers posting on Triblocal.com have to register and accept the terms of a user agreement. The site was modeled after YourHub.com, produced by the Denver Rocky Mountain News.

“We’re really pleased with the citizen engagement we’ve had so far and hope the publication will continue to foster this sense of community and collaboration,” Triblocal editor Kyle Leonard said in the statement. “We’re sure many contributors will be proud to see their stories and photos in print.”

The Tribune is one of 11 newspapers owned by Chicago-based Tribune Co.
