Golden – A financial counselor from Denver was found guilty last week of stealing more than $3,000 from six developmentally disabled women.

A Jefferson County jury deliberated 45 minutes before finding Melissa Klassen guilty of felony theft, officials said.

Between 2002 and 2003, Klassen was a finance counselor at a Littleton-area residential facility for the disabled that was owned and operated by Developmental Disabilities Resource Center.

She was responsible for helping with personal finances as well as other care for six residents, all of whom received Medicaid assistance.

Klassen, 46, wrote checks to herself out of the women’s accounts, district attorney’s officials said.

Sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 13.
