The Broncos re-signed running back Cedric Cobbs today and the player once cut by the team was back on the practice field today.
Cobbs was cut by Denver in May. The team brought him back because of a thin running back group heading into Saturday night’s home game against Cleveland.
The Broncos will be without two of its top running backs — Travis Henry (knee injury) and Mike Bell (hip) — Saturday and likely the Aug. 30 game against Arizona in the preseason finale. Both Henry and Bell are expected to be ready for the regular-season opener Sept. 9 at Buffalo.
Cobbs will have his work cut out for him to make the 53-man roster.
Coach Mike Shanahan said after practice today that injured receiver Rod Smith plans to return to the field sometime between the sixth and eighth weeks of the season.
Smith, who has a hip injury, will likely start the regular season on the physically unable to perform list. He had hip surgery in February.
