This just in: The Broncos don’t have any interest in Michael Vick. Not now, not ever.
Vick figures to be a free agent after he’s cut by the Falcons and serves a year or two in jail and a lengthy suspension. But if he ever plays in Denver, it would be in another team’s uniform.
Putting aside the emotions of the case, the ultimate question with Vick is this: What NFL team would want him? Because the truth is, he hasn’t emerged into the Pro Bowl-caliber quarterback the scouts envisioned when he was the first pick in the 2001 draft.
How pedestrian is Vick as a passer? Consider this: In an era in which 60 percent is close to average, he never has completed more than 56.4 percent of his passes. He did that in 2004. In the next two years, his percentages dropped to 55.3 and 52.6, one of the lowest figures in the league.
His touchdowns-to-interceptions ratio hasn’t been particularly impressive, either. He threw for 14 interceptions and 12 interceptions in 2004. A year later, the numbers were 15 and 13. He reached 20 touchdown passes last season for the first time in his career, but also threw 13 interceptions.
Quality NFL quarterbacks should have a 2-to-1 ratio or better. Even Jay Cutler, thrown into the fire late last season, had nine touchdown passes and five INTs.
Who knows? Maybe Burt Reynolds, or whoever his coach is in prison, can get Vick straightened out.
