Sure, it’s the NFL exhibition season, but it’s never too early to start looking at the standings.
The baseball standings, that is.
The preseason standings don’t mean anything in the NFL. But hey, don’t take my word for it. I give you the world champion Colts, the proud owners of zero — count ’em, zero — preseason wins in 2006.
Sure, the Broncos looked bad in Saturday night’s loss at Dallas. True, they got beat on the line of scrimmage and every other spot on the field. And yes, it could be a sign of things to come.
But the point is, there’s no proven link between preseason performance and the regular-season version. In fact, as often as not, the good teams during the season have a lousy exhibition season.
It’s easy enough to figure out. NFL coaches are paid hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars to get a leg up on other coaches. That being the case, why would the Broncos’ coaches game plan for the preseason reveal their tendencies to an opponent they’ll face during the season?
As ugly as things were in Dallas and may be in Denver Saturday night, you might want to keep something in mind: It’s all about September, not August.
