At a time when more Coloradans are living in cities and suburbs, it’s important to not only remember the state’s proud agricultural history but also embrace today’s vibrant rural communities.

The best way to do that is to make a trip to the 135th annual Colorado State Fair in Pueblo. The fair, which began Friday, does its best to meld those rural traditions, such as homemade pie and pickle contests and 4-H events, with events for urban and suburban kids, such as dog training and rocketry. And, of course, there are also non-agricultural attractions.

The fair, hurt by lagging attendance, has posted operating losses in recent years. Last year, opening weekend rainstorms dampened overall numbers.

We were pleased to see promoters trying new ideas, such as the Union Pacific train, pulled by Locomotive No. 844, that will leave Denver today for Pueblo. Something needs to be done to attract more people to the fair.

Some have suggested moving the fair out of Pueblo and closer to Denver. We’d rather the fair find a way to sustain itself in Pueblo. A little break from Mother Nature this year would help.
