DENVER—Two separate fires believed to have been ignited by smokers at retirement centers early Saturday left one woman critically burned, officials said.

At 2:46 a.m., a fire broke out at a retirement complex in west Denver, said Denver Fire Department spokesman Phil Champagne.

About 10 minutes later, a woman in her 60s on oxygen ignited a fire in her apartment at an 18-story retirement building about five blocks away, said Champagne and a night manager of the building. The woman suffered severe burns, said Metro Manor night manager Cindy Salvador.

Champagne estimated the city has had seven fires this year that were started by smokers using oxygen machines.
