COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—The El Paso County Jail has stopped listing the charges inmates face on the Web because some inmates have been assaulted.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Lt. Lari Sevene said friends of some victims were telling other inmates about what other inmates had done and they were attacked, the Gazette reported Saturday.

“Or the inmates would track down someone, thinking the person attacked their brother or something, and when they saw the charges, put two and two together,” she said. “The inmates were telling us that this is where they were getting their information.”

The Gazette said that before the information was withdrawn, anyone could log on and look up an inmate’s information.

Sevene said the department was concerned that it didn’t have enough staff to prevent the assaults on its 1,571 inmates if they continued.

“We want to make sure everyone is safe. We don’t care what their charges are. It goes back to the concept of innocent until proven guilty,” she said. “To protect the inmates – that’s what we’re here for. So that’s why when these things come up, we make the necessary changes.”
