FARMINGTON, N.M.—The New Mexico Health Department has released a study showing that the ground-level ozone levels in rural northwestern San Juan County, near the Colorado line, are similar to those of urban areas.

The study also says those ozone levels are high for the entire Southwest. National parks are reporting high levels and Denver may come under new federal regulations for breaking standards.

It looked at data from 2000, 2001 and 2002 to determine how many asthma-related medical visits occurred each day.

The study compared the visits to ozone data from three monitors in the county.

Days with high ozone levels corrolated with increased asthma-related medical visits.
