With a new title sponsor, a shot to enter the Guinness Book of Records and a free pair of new shoes for every entrant, the Newton 24 Hours of Triathlon (also available in 24 Hours of Duathlon and eight-hour sizes) returns to Cherry Creek State Park in Aurora for its second incarnation this Saturday and Sunday. Created by adventure racer extraordinaire Ian Adamson, this overnight version of the short-course swim (half-mile), bike (11 miles), run (3 miles) and repeat is as much about strategy as it is endurance. With the ultimate goal of completing as many “triathlons” as possible in 24 hours, teams and individuals bank as many legs in each discipline as they can in whichever order they choose. Top the 215-mile record established by Iona MacKenzie in last summer’s inaugural event, and you’ll earn a line in the Guinness record book along with free race entry for 2008. If that’s not incentive enough, maybe the free Newton running shoes (valued at $155) going to all competitors will be. Even if he finishes dead last, Papa won’t need a new pair of shoes anymore. But he just may need a nap.
