Maybe it’s in the water at Dove Valley.
How else do we explain Brandon Marshall saying the Broncos have the best wide-receiver tandem in the league? Or Hamza Abdullah claiming they have the best secondary in the business?
Don’t get me wrong. I’ve been around enough to know the drill. Players are supposed to say those kinds of things. They’re paid to be confident. It’s not like they’re going to say, “We’re so lousy, we’ll be out of the playoff race by November.”
Then again, it was more than a little surprising Thursday to hear Marshall say, “… I think we have the best (wideout) tandem in the league.” Just as it was a surprise to hear Abdullah say, “I honestly believe we have the best secondary in the league.”
Maybe the Broncos need a reality check. If so, here goes: They have a chance to be very good this season, maybe even great. And that’s what it will take to have any chance of unseating the Chargers atop the AFC West.
The Chargers are the real deal. The Broncos? With the preseason we just saw, all we can say is they might be.
