“Carmelo Anthony has been one of the Jordan brand athletes since his NBA career began, so I think that old geezer, Michael Jordan, had his bifocals on straight and saw
Melo’s potential before it was revealed to us – and maybe even before it was evident to Anthony.”
Diann, Carbondale, Ill.
Kiz: Here are three fearless basketball predictions for the next 12 months: Anthony leads NBA in scoring. Nuggets win playoff series. Melo mines Olympic gold in China.
Defense! Defense! Defense?
“Yawn. Kobe Bryant and LeBron James are far superior players to Anthony. Wake me up when Melo can spell d-e-f-e-n-s-e. Scorers are a dime a dozen. Anthony will only see the NBA trophy on television or by winning a video game.”
Ted, a Bryant devotee
Kiz: Fools who try to portray Anthony as a loser conveniently forget he won the NCAA championship as a teenager, instead of taking the money and running out of high school, as Bryant and James did.
Time for some snitchin’
“Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick could be a positive force to counteract the ‘Stop Snitchin’ ‘ campaign in our inner cities. If I was part of that ruthless culture, I’d be intimidated. Vick could plant the seed to counter this cultural decay. Loved your column about Vick doing something like this when he gets back to the NFL. Ain’t this a cause worth championing?”
Patrick, an optimistic soul
Kiz: Vick stood in front of the nation and told us he was wrong. How many perps do that? Heck, how many presidents do it? Next, Vick will be asked to “snitch” on the dogfighting community, which gives him a chance to take a lead role in the fight against criminals who wish he would keep quiet.
Just human nature
“I don’t know what school you went to, but back in the 1950s and 1960s, it was never cool for anyone to snitch. I think ‘don’t snitch’ is human nature. Cases in point: the Mafia, the Roman Catholic hierarchy, police and politicians. Name me one walk of life where everyone isn’t expected to toe the line and you’ll have proof of extraterrestrial life.”
Frank, Littleton
Kiz: From our earliest days on the playground, maybe it has never been cool to tattle. But hasn’t it always been a great American tradition to stand up for the truth? Can’t speak for you, but my friend E.T. and I believe when good people witness a crime against man or beast they will summon the courage to phone home with the truth.
Dumb and dumber
“At the risk of being labeled a politically correct whiner or an animal hugger, I do feel you have set aside issues of animal cruelty in regards to Vick. So please don’t lessen the heinous aspects of such cruelty by making a reference to ‘dumb animals.’ The importance revolves around innocence, trust, love and honesty. Every animal I know has all of these qualities. Vick has none of them. Who’s dumber?”
Mark, Los Angeles
Kiz: Know one of the best traits of dogs? They aren’t as easily offended as humans. C’mon, should The Dumb Friends League be considered cruel for selecting its name? And FYI: The Kiz family dearly loves our dog, despite our pooch’s inability to recognize the word “sit” if you spotted him the “S” and “I.”
The old college cry
And today’s parting shot sounds like ugly burps from the exhaust pipe of the broken- down bandwagon carrying Colorado and Colorado State football fans. I think somebody wants me to get out and push.
“I respect the fact that college football in Colorado was down last year, but once again you’re about 15 minutes late for the bus. In part, college sports are down in Colorado because of lack of support by Coloradans. Folsom Field is rarely at capacity, and neither is Hughes Stadium. It would be nice if a voice of the people such as yourself could stand up for something, rather than bash it.”
