CHLORIDE, Ariz.—A 13-year-old girl was found dead in a mine shaft Sunday morning in northwestern Arizona and a 10-year-old girl was being treated for serious injuries, officials said.
The girls went missing at about 7 p.m. Saturday after they went out riding an all-terrain vehicle, according to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office.
Officials began searching for the girls and discovered they were in a mine shaft at about 6:20 a.m. Sunday in Chloride, about 17 miles north of Kingman.
Sheriff’s spokeswoman Sandy Edwards said a rope team sent into the mine found the 13-year-old dead and efforts were under way to remove her from the mine. Her family had been notified of her death.
Edwards said the 10-year-old girl had “major injuries” and was being transported to University Medical Center in Las Vegas.
Edwards said the mine shaft was vertical, but did not know how far down in the shaft the girls had been. She did not know whether the girls were friends or were related.
