What do you say, in shuffling through all the factors that could make for a successful 2007 Broncos season, we don’t overlook the obvious?
The rules are essentially rigged in today’s NFL to promote the passing game, and the Broncos’ passing game hasn’t been very good in recent years.
Take 2005, when Jake Plummer threw 18 touchdown passes. Or last season, when the Broncos ranked 25th in the league in passing yards.
Sure, Mike Shanahan’s devotion to the running game impacts those numbers, but even Shanahan acknowledged during the off-season that the Broncos needed to upgrade their passing game.
Enter Daniel Graham and Brandon Stokley. Oh, and Brandon Marshall, who’ll step in for Rod Smith as the Broncos’ No. 2 wideout.
The fact is, Jay Cutler will have more weapons around him than Plummer did. Now he needs to use them. Running the ball is always a good thing. But to be great, the Broncos will have to throw it, too.
