Boulder —When asked this afternoon for an update on senior Bernard Jackson, Colorado coach Dan Hawkins did not sound optimistic that the former starting quarterback will get in a game this season.

Hawkins said Jackson needs to complete an independent study class to become academically eligible. “I would never close the door,” Hawkins said. “But I’m also realistic. He is (out of the picture), and he has been. So until something else changes, that’s his status.”

Jackson converted to a run-catch “slash” role during spring drills and was elected by his peers as the offensive team captain. Last week, Hawkins transferred that captaincy to senior offensive tackle Tyler Polumbus on a permanent basis.

Hawkins has expressed empathy for Jackson, who also has been preoccupied with personal issues.

He helps to care for a 2-year-old boy, Jayden. And Jackson does what he can for an ill father at home in the Los Angeles area.

“I asked Bernard to see me every day, and he does,” Hawkins said. “I’m definitely concerned about not just getting his degree, but his personal stability and being able to get his life in order, given all his situations right now.

“I’m very concerned about that. He needs stability, which unfortunately in this world does not happen for some kids.”

After redshirting in 2003, Jackson played little during his first two years before becoming the starting quarterback in the second game last season. Starting the final 11 games, he completed 108-of-219 passes for seven touchdowns with seven interceptions. This is Jackson’s final season of eligibility.

He also rushed for 677 yards and seven scores. Jackson has practiced intermittently since the team reassembled in early August. “But he has night school, so he’s out there (in practice) for only the first hour or so,” Hawkins said.

Hawkins said Jackson had been in the team’s plans until running into academic problems.

“We were definitely counting on him,” the coach said. “We thought he and Hugh (Charles) would be our two speed guys.

“That being said, after doing this for 25 years, and knowing how this whole thing works, sometimes it doesn’t pan out, for a variety of reasons.”

Jackson could not be reached for comment.
