A 6-year-old boy was taken to Children’s Hospital in critical condition this morning after he was struck by a pickup in a hit-and-run accident.
Christopher Gonzales of 1317 Kenton St. had serious head injuries but was in stable condition, said Lt. Bruce Smith, Aurora police spokesman.
“We’re all optimistic at this point that the child will survive,” Smith said.
Onlookers tackled the driver and a passenger after the driver crashed in an attempt to flee the accident scene, he said.
Police arrested the driver, who had a Mexican Consulate card identifying him as Ricardo Gomez-Carcamo, 26, following the accident at the intersection of 12th Avenue and Moline Street in Aurora. Authorities are trying to confirm his identity, Smith said.
It is unclear whether he is legally in the country, he said. Gomez-Carcamo is being held for investigation of felony leaving the scene of a serious injury accident, Smith said.
Gonzales was with his father who was visiting family at 1172 N. Moline St. when his father started changing a tire on a truck. The boy walked out in front of the truck and was struck about 9:30 a.m. by a 1999 Ford Ranger, Smith said.
Gomez-Carcamo allegedly put the pickup in reverse and backed up rapidly. He crashed into bushes and a light pole at 11th Avenue, jumped out and ran. Area residents grabbed him and a passenger from the car until police arrived.
Charges are pending.
