Whether you’re spring-cleaning carpets or doing year-round maintenance, a new consumer how-to guide can remind you of the drill and define top tips.

The title of the guide, “Carpet Cleaning Tips for Dummies,” identifies the booklet with Wiley Publishing Inc.’s well-known reference series. It’s sponsored by the Carpet and Rug Institute and , and it deals with situations ranging from hairy pet problems to the care of precious Oriental rugs.

The book’s author, household management expert Elizabeth Goldsmith, is all for vacuuming regularly and often to stop dirt buildup.

“Get the stuff up before it sinks down into your rugs,” she said, speaking by phone from Florida, where she’s professor of family-resource management at Tallahassee University, “and concentrate on high-traffic areas.”

Something that makes the cleaning easier: Apart from the fact that they work well, she noted that some of today’s vacuum cleaners have great design, with their Space Age looks and interesting colors.
