A former Denver businessman was one of the victim’s in Sunday’s airplane crash in Thailand.

Stefan Mark Woronoff, 42, was one of five Americans who died in the plane, which was flying from Bangkok to Phuket, where Woronoff lived.

His father, David Woronoff, of Aurora, said he knew his son was planning to fly to Phuket that day and knew the day after that he was among the casualties.

Of the 130 people on board, 89 died.

Stefan Woronoff was born Nov. 27, 1964, in Bridgeport, Conn., and was reared in Bridgewater, N.J.; Newport, R.I.; and Ormond Beach, Fla.

He moved to Colorado in 1985 and for a while worked as a manager at Rafferty’s Restaurant in Greeley.

He was a 1996 graduate of Metropolitan State College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems and management.

He was a software engineer for Gerber Systems Corp. in Englewood and later for Nokia Corp. in San Diego and Oulu, Finland.

He moved to Thailand three years ago “to take an early retirement,” his father said.

Stefan Woronoff loved Colorado, mountain biking, the Broncos and skiing, his father said. “He did everything at full tilt.”

A memorial is planned for Woronoff at 5 p.m. Sunday at Dixon’s Restaurant, 16th and Wazee streets in LoDo.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his mother, Leah Schuereman, and stepfather, John Coleman, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; his stepmother, Karen Woronoff of Aurora; three sisters: Bonnie Rind of Waltham, Mass., Jamie Kusmick of Loveland and Robin Woronoff of Aurora; and a brother, Keith Woronoff of Aurora.
