NACOGDOCHES, Texas—State prison tracking dogs were being used Tuesday to search for three inmates who escaped from the Nacogdoches County Jail.

Sheriff’s officials identify the escapees as Marcuese Eugene Tyler, 24, of Lufkin; Jose Guillermo Portillo, 32, of Russellville, Ark.; and Antonio Martinez, 20, of Nacogdoches.

The three apparently slipped through an unsecured door, went through a recreational area, over two fences and then out of the jail complex, officials said.

A Colorado-based company inspected the locks and fences earlier this week and apparently left one lock unsecured, said Sheriff Thomas Kerss.

An indicator to alert guards that the door had been opened was not working, according to Kerss.

Martinez had been arrested in connection with the November street racing deaths of three people, authorities said.

Tyler was jailed on three charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, evading arrest and probation violations.

Portillo had been charged with possession of a controlled substance, records show.
