New Orleans – Actor Brad Pitt and producer Steve Bing are teaming up to develop 150 new sustainable, affordable homes in New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward.
The community is the first effort for Pitt’s Make It Right project, started at the behest of an elderly man determined to return to New Orleans.
“He asked us directly, simply and profoundly to help make it right,” Pitt said. “So that’s what we’re doing.”
Pitt and Bing each have pledged to match $5 million in contributions to help rebuild the Lower Ninth Ward. Pitt became a part-time resident of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. After seeing the devastation firsthand and meeting with the hardest-hit residents, he started the Make It Right project to help rebuild the Lower Ninth Ward.
Last year, Pitt worked with Global Green to develop sustainable, green multifamily housing in the Lower Ninth Ward.
In addition to replacing homes destroyed by Katrina, the sustainable design incorporated into the homes is expected to ease the financial burden of high energy costs and reduce their environmental impact.
