Western Collegiate Hockey Association coaches Wednesday released their 37th annual preseason poll, compiled by the Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald, and they think the University of Denver will finish fourth, one spot behind rival Colorado College.

North Dakota is the pick to win the conference, receiving seven first-place votes and 79 total points, followed by Minnesota (74), CC (55), DU (53) and Wisconsin (52). Minnesota received the other three first-place votes. The Pioneers return 15 letterwinners from last year’s team that finished fourth with a 21-15-4 overall mark, 13-11-4 in the WCHA.

Taylor Phinney’s excellent summer on his bike has earned him a spot in Faces in the Crowd, the long-running feature in Sports Illustrated.

Phinney, a senior at Boulder High School, became the first American to win a UCI (International Cycling Union) Junior Road and Track World Championship, finishing the 28-kilometer men’s time trial in 37 minutes, 28:01 seconds. He also won the Tour de l’Abitibi, a major stage race in Quebec.
