Los Angeles -When the Arizona Diamondbacks arrived at PNC Park on Thursday, a check of the weather left ace Brandon Webb on the Rockies’ Double Doppler.
So as if tonight’s game – the biggest in Denver in 12 years – needed any more flavor, the National League’s reigning Cy Young Award winner stands between Colorado and one of the greatest finishing kicks ever.
“I am sure they recognized what we are doing right now,” rookie shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said. “If you are going to be the best, you have to beat the best.”
The Diamondbacks were concerned about a potential rainout or an interrupted game in Pittsburgh, leaving it possible Webb would work a few innings then be unavailable the rest of the season. Micah Owings was moved up as Arizona won 8-0, keeping them atop the National League West.
Webb is an accomplished guitarist with Prestone running through his veins. He’s ideal for the big stage, but this season the Rockies have broken Fenders over his head. Against Colorado, Webb is 0-3 with a 6.47 ERA. Against everyone else, he’s 17-7 with a 2.46 ERA.
“I owe them for about the last five games,” Webb told Arizona reporters. “But I definitely have confidence. I have pretty much seen the same lineup from them. It seemed like they got me early on (this season). I hope I have a strong one.”
The Rockies’ success could hinge on the left-handed complement in their meat-grinder lineup. Brad Hawpe (11-for-35, four home runs) and Todd Helton (two home runs, eight RBIs) have enjoyed success against Webb, whose heavy sinker – think of hitting a bowling ball as it drops off a picnic table – makes life miserable for right-handers.
“He’s tough, and he has a game plan in how he attacks you,” Hawpe said. “You’re talking about a perennial Cy Young guy. It should be fun.”
