Northern Colorado’s losses continue to mount and the gaping holes in the Bears’ defense still exist, but coach Scott Downing sees development.
“The thing we talk about is the process, about Monday through Friday preparing for the game, being attentive in practice and paying attention to detail and hitting the weight room, and continuing to do what we call pounding the rock,” said Downing, whose program is on a 12-game losing streak dating to last year. “We know the rock is a win, and if we keep pounding it, pretty soon it’s going to break open and we’re going to have success.”
UNC (0-4) visits Cal Poly (2-2) on Saturday for a nonconference game in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The Bears, who are allowing 531 yards per game, will play on the road for the fourth time in five weeks.
“Our road trips, the guys have gotten in a rhythm,” Downing said. “On Thursday and Friday they’re ready to go. It really hasn’t been a problem. … You know football players and coaches, we like to have routine. So it hasn’t been a negative for us, but certainly we’d like to sleep in our own beds some weekends, but I think our team is handling it very well.”
