PUEBLO, Colo.—A wildfire sparked by a cutting torch burned 40 acres south of Pueblo and threatened four homes, but no one was hurt and the only damage was to nonresidential structures.
The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Department said the fire started about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday about 20 miles south of Pueblo.
Sheriff Kirk Taylor said it was ignited by a torch that three men were using to cut metal pipe at a house. Taylor said the incident would be referred to prosecutors for possible charges of fourth-degree arson.
A light tanker made two air drops of fire-retardant slurry and about 25 firefighters from departments in Rye, Pueblo and Pueblo West and from the Pueblo Emergency Response Team fought the fire.
Taylor said the area did not have its own fire department.
