BROOMFIELD, Colo.—Beau Schoolcraft of Kent Denver shot a 2-under-par 69 Monday to take a two-shot lead in the Class 4A state boys golf championships at the Broadlands Golf Course.

Four players were tied for second with 71s: teammate Matt Schovee, Nick Umholtz of Greeley Central—the 2005 Class 4A state champ—Zane Covey of Pueblo West and Will Percy of St. Mary’s.

Schoolcraft’s putter sometimes failed him but his driver never did. He finished the day with a birdie putt of about 18 feet at No. 18 and helped lift Kent Denver, the defending state champions, to first place in the team standings.

Greeley Central finished in second place with 221 and Pueblo Centennial was in third with 225.
