The Avalanche will open the season with former Colorado Eagles standout Tyler Weiman as its backup goaltender.
Avs coach Joel Quenneville said after Monday’s practice at the Family Sports Center that Jose Theodore, who began practicing last week following August knee surgery, won’t be on the active roster for Wednesday’s season opener against the Dallas Stars.
Forwards Brad Richardson (wrist) and Cody McCormick (shoulder) also will remain out, but the Avs say the mechanics of the transition from preseason to the regular season mean none of the three have to be placed on the injured list. Rather, they just won’t be activated.
The way this shapes up, the Avalanche will have 22 players available for opening night, meaning there will have to be only two healthy scratches.
