Pilsener (or pilsner): PILLZ-ner, German. A light Bohemian lager beer served in a cone-shaped footed glass. Created Oct. 5, 1842 in the town of Plzen in today’s central Czech Republic at the Plzensky Prazdroj Brewery, home of Pilsner Urquell brand beer. Brewer Josef Groll combined the bottom fermenting process, “lagering,” with local hops and barley to create the golden, much-imitated brew that set the standard for Budweiser, Coors and Miller beers. “Pilsner Urquell” means “from the original source, Plzen.” Eleven Denver-area bars will toast the lager’s birthday Friday: Sobo 151, Govn’r’s Park, West End Tavern, British Bulldog, Wazee Supper Club, Lazy Dog, Paramount Cafe, Platte River Bar & Grill, Irish Snug, Celtic Tavern and Celtic House Pub.
