Salt Lake City – A convicted killer captured after six days on the run remains in critical condition at University of Utah Hospital.

Police said Danny Martin Gallegos was armed when he was shot in the abdomen Saturday night after emerging from a stolen sport utility vehicle in western Wyoming. Gallegos and another convicted killer, Juan Carlos Diaz-Arevalo, were captured after an 11-mile chase on Interstate 80.

The men escaped from Utah’s Daggett County Jail on Sept. 23 by climbing a fence.

Police said the men broke into the Daggett County home of a retired Salt Lake City police officer, bound him with duct tape and fled in his SUV.

The retired officer managed to free himself and call for help.

The chase ended when a Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper put a spike strip on the interstate that flattened the SUV’s tires, about 100 miles east of the Utah-Wyoming state line, between Rock Springs, Wyo., and Green River, Wyo.

Gallegos, 49, and Diaz-Arevalo, 27, both had firearms they found in the SUV, Wyoming authorities said.

Gallegos was shot once after he swung a rifle around at officers who stopped him.
