Latest bumper sticker bound to hit Denver any day now: “Honk if you haven’t tried out as a Broncos’ kick returner.”
With the team’s special teams in disarray, Mike Shanahan isn’t waiting any longer in his attempt to fix a long-standing problem.
Monday, punt and kickoff return man Domenik Hixon, a fourth-rounder in 2006, hit the waiver wire. Enter … well, enter lots of candidates.
The plan du jour is to try Andre Hall or Brian Clark on kickoffs and Clark, Glenn Martinez or Dre Bly on punt returns. Dre Bly? Yes, the coaches are considering him. And don’t be shocked if it happens, considering Champ Bailey is, in addition to being the best cornerback in the league, the Broncos’ best special-teams player.
To be honest, I’ve long since grown weary of writing about the Broncos’ special teams. Trouble, the problem won’t seem to go away. And if you believe Bailey, who called the Broncos special teams “the worst in the league” the other day, it’s only getting worse.
