The 20 or so folks lined up at Denver Ted’s Cheesesteaks (1308 Pearl St.) at noon Thursday had to wait a bit for their sandwiches, but they didn’t seem to mind. They only paid 85 cents for the cheese-drenched piles of thin-sliced beef on genuine Amoroso rolls.
Darryl Wright and Melissa Nguyen walked over from the Department of Labor and Employment after co-workers alerted them to the special promoted by KOA 850-AM. “I knew they had the game on here — they’re good for that,” said Wright as he waited for his chance to “munch on Philly.”
“The Rockies are the only Colorado team that haven’t had enough shine yet,” Wright said. A quick poll of the 50 or so people in the restaurant turned up plenty of Rockies fans and not a single Phillies supporter.
“I’m a Philly cheesesteak fan,” said Chris Campanile, pledging allegiance to neither team. “I heard about it on the radio. I woulda come here even if they were eight bucks.” Regular price for a 9-inch sandwich, made with “grade A choice sirloin steer beef” is $6.
Some of the folks at Marczyk Fine Foods, 770 E. 17th Ave. (at Clarkson) just happen to be Red Sox fans, but these Uptown grocers know their audience, so they’ve created two sandwiches for the playoffs. The Hot Rox, $5.52 (the Rockies’ season average) comes with a “rockpile” of meatballs covered in marinara sauce on a hoagie roll.
The Fenway, $4.06 (for Ted Williams’s average) is your basic Boston North End hot Italian sausage sandwich with peppers and onions.
Over at Chicago, 6680 W. Colfax Ave. (near Pierce), “Everybody’s rockin’ and rollin’,” says Dianne Margotte Zimmerman. “It’s been really a trip we’ve been selling lots of Chicago-style hot dogs — Vienna all-beef hot dogs with mustard, bright green relish, onions, sliced tomatoes, sport peppers, pickles and celery salt on a steamed poppyseed bun.” Owned by Chicago northsiders Joe and Luanne Margotte, the Lakewood restaurant also sells house-made Italian beef sandwiches on Gonnella rolls with giardiniera (pickled veggies) and green bell peppers, Green River soda, Jay’s potato chips, Salerno butter cookies and Fannie May candies.
