Two drivers died Thursday in a head-on crash in Routt County.
The accident happened at about 2 p.m. about 14 miles east of Craig on U.S. 40, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
A 15-year-old passenger and a 3-year-old were injured in the crash and taken to Yampa Valley Medical Center with “moderate” injuries, the State Patrol said.
The teen was buckled-in, and the 3-year-old was in a child restraint seat. None of the occupants of the two cars in the crash were identified.
The State Patrol gave the following account of the accident: A 1998 Chrysler Cirrus driven by a 36-year-old motorist was westbound on U.S. 40 when it veered into the eastbound lane and struck a 2001 Ford Focus, driven by a 26-year-old man.
After the impact, the Chrysler went off the north shoulder of the road. The Focus rolled onto its right side, slid across the eastbound lane and off the south shoulder, then rolled onto its left side before coming to a stop about 14 feet off the south side of the road.
Both cars were badly damaged in the head-on collision, and both drivers died at the scene. The teenager and 3-year-old were passengers in the Chrysler.
The crash is under investigation by the State Patrol.
